Dolby system pays off for Rovers

Gresley Rovers made a winning start to the Beazer Homes League campaign on Saturday – without last season’s two top scorers.
Player-of-the-year Brian Beresford failed to get a shirt and Paul Acklam could only make the substitutes’ bench. But manager Steve Dolby’s choice was vindicated as Rovers stormed to an impressive 2-0 win over Dudley Town at the Moat Ground.
The Gresley boss said: “The fact that our two top scorers from last season were left out only bodes well for the club because it shows the competition for places we’ve built up.
“I stressed to the players before the game that there was someone waiting to get a chance in virtually every position in the side. They all know they’ve got to play well to stay in the side.”
Dolby was clearly pleased with Saturday’s performance because he names a virtually unchanged squad for tomorrow’s trip to Bridgnorth Town (7.30pm), adding former Grantham defender Dave Swainston, back from holiday, to the 13 on duty on Saturday.
Craig Weston, injured on Saturday, Scott Elliott and Beresford are all pencilled in for the reserves home match against Atherstone Reserves tomorrow (7.30pm).
