Gresley Rovers have signed former Derby County midfielder Robbie Briscoe.
The signing is a major coup for Gresley on the eve of their first Beazer Homes League season.Briscoe, 22, has played regularly for Derby’s Central League side over the past few seasons and made more than a dozen first-team appearances.
In recent weeks he played in pre-season friendlies with Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United as well as appearing in Derby’s reserve team.
He was told before the end of the season that he would be getting his release from the Rams after six years at the club and joins Gresley after deciding to quit the full-time game.
The Breadsall-based 22-year-old played at left back in Rovers 6-1 win over Westfields on Saturday – scoring in the second half – and signed immediately afterwards.
He said: “I’ve been keeping my options open but, at the end of the day, I decided it was best for me to play non-league football and work as well.
“Gresley is close to home, I’ve played here quite a few times and know the ground well. It’s a nice, friendly club and seems like a good set-up. The pitch has improved too – it’s almost flat now!”
Manager Steve Dolby said: “I’m delighted with the signing. Robbie will give us the experience we’ve been looking for at the back.
“He’s available to play for us in numerous positions – anywhere on the left side or in the back four.
“He’s very happy to come to Gresley and very keen to play – it’s a very good signing for us.”
