FA vote for new non-league structure
The go-ahead was given yesterday (Saturday) for the biggest shake-up of non-league football.
FA Council members agreed a re-structure that will establish two new regionalised leagues from 2004/2005 - Conference North and Conference South feeding in to the existing Conference League. The Conference 2 leagues will be run by the newly formed Football Alliance - a coalition formed by the Dr Martens, Unibond and Rymans leagues plus the Conference.
FA and Conference chiefs meet tomorrow (Monday) to finalise the timetable which will give clubs a full season to prepare.
The final structure will see:
- 22 clubs per league.
- Play offs at each step down to level 4.
- Better linkages throughout the league structure.
- A semi-national step between the Football Conference and Level 2.
- Removes league within a league.
- More consistent rules, regulations, ground grading and promotion/relegation.
- The FA's aims & objectives.
