Rovers fans in Frank tribute

Gresley Rovers supporters have clubbed together to present sacked boss Frank Northwood with a memento of his record-breaking stint as Moat Ground supremo.
The fans presented an engraved cut glass brandy glass to the former boss after Rovers’ West Midlands League Cup Final defeat by Paget at Blakenall on Wednesday. It followed Northwood’s dismissal in March for gross misconduct. Club officials delivered a sacking letter to Northwood’s home, leaving the document on the doormat.
Supporter Alec Smith, who organised the presentation, said today: “I’ve been a critic of Northwood’s over the years and called for him to be sacked myself more than once.
“It wasn’t the sacking that made me angry, it was the way it was done. A gang of us who sit together in the stand all felt the same way, so we clubbed together to buy this piece of cut glass for Frank to let him know how we felt.
“The service he gave to Rovers over seven seasons were second to none and I feel the way he was treated was nothing short of disgusting.”
Northwood said last night: “It was a very nice gesture. I feel I’ve still got plenty of friends at Gresley.”
