Dolby sidesteps cup controversy

Gresley Rovers boss Steve Dolby diplomatically avoided controversy after seeing his side beaten 2-1 by Paget Rangers in last night’s West Midlands League Cup Final.
Dolby refused to blame an appalling playing surface for contributing to his team’s downfall and declined to comment on the fact that referee Harold Underwood held up the game for a string of stoppages then failed to add on injury time just as Gresley were staging a late rally.Instead Dolby put the blame on his players saying: “I’m disappointed because we played badly. We started well and at half time I was reasonably happy at 0-0.
“But we weren’t strong enough in the middle and gave then too much space. We stopped playing and started knocking long balls down the middle which isn’t our game.
“Good luck to Paget – they scored two good goals. Martin Dick scored a cracker for us, but it came just too late.”
Rovers now wait to hear if their application for promotion to the Beazer Homes League has been successful, with a May 19th deadline for the decision.
