Rovers wait and hope

Gresley Rovers go into tonight’s West Midlands League Cup final against Paget Rangers facing an agonising wait before learning their future.
Officials from the Beazer Homes League inspected Rovers’ Moat Ground home yesterday with the club expecting a decision on May 19th.

Gresley have already won the league by a 14-point margin and aim to go one better tonight by beating Paget Rangers in the league cup final at Blakenall (7.30).

Manager Steve Dolby chooses from a full-strength squad insisting: “We aim to complete the double to step up our claim for a place in the Beazer Homes League.”

Yesterday’s inspection consisted of a “very thorough” one-and-a-half-hour tour of the Moat Ground by the league’s grading committee followed by a 45-minute presentation.

Rovers development officer Frank McArdle, who has masterminded the club’s third attempt to make the elusive step up into the Beazer Midland Division, said today: “We were complimented on our efforts, and whatever the outcome, the players, supporters and the club itself could not have done any more in their efforts to gain promotion.

“The progress we have made on developing the ground will be there for all to see next season, whatever league we are in.”

Meanwhile, Rovers face a tough final hurdle tonight against Paget who, ironically, are one of their main rivals for promotion.

The Sutton Coldfield-based club, who were relegated from the Beazer Midland Division four years ago, have presented their own bid on the achievement of finishing runners-up to Rovers this term.
