Dolby faces crunch time

Steve Dolby faces his toughest test as Gresley Rovers manager on the eve of tomorrow’s West Midlands League Cup final against Paget Rangers at Blakenall (7.30pm).
For the first time since taking over from Fran Northwood, Dolby has to tell two senior players they will not be in his side. Not since taking the Moat Ground hot seat at the beginning of April has Dolby – who has yet to concede a goal in six games under his stewardship – faced the problem of who to leave out of the side.
Now he has a 15-man squad available with only the cup-tied Jason Minton unavailable.
Dolby said today: “It’s nice to have a full squad available and while it’s just a matter of deciding on my best team there are one or two problem positions. I want to make the right decision because we badly want to win the game. Some people are saying it’s not so important now that we’ve won the league but that’s not the case. We badly want to win the double to add strength to our case for promotion.”
With defender Martin Dick and striker Paul Acklam both having missed work this week through illness, Dolby is leaving his team selection until the last minute.
Paget finished runners-up to Rovers in the league and were second highest scorers – again behind Gresley. But Dolby hopes to see his side establish a new club record of seven consecutive clean sheets.
