Rovers title surge

Gresley Rovers stretched their lead at the top of the West Midlands League to 12 points with a 3-1 win at Oldbury United last night.
First half goals from Neil Lovell and Paul Acklam and a second half own goal by former Moatman Clive Walker wrapped up Rovers’ 18th league win of the season and delighted manager Frank Northwood who declared: “That was championship form.”

He said afterwards: “Not many sides come here and score three. Oldbury defended well but we produced a tremendous team performance – everybody in the side played well.”

Northwood was impressed with the way his team performed with four in midfield and said he hoped to field the same side for Saturday’s visit of Malvern Town.

But that may not be possible after midfielder Richard Wardle limped off in the second half with an ankle injury.

Defender Jason Minton missed the game after injuring his back at work while striker Kieron Smith was also absent with an ankle injury but expects to be fit for Saturday.
