Gresley Rovers’ coach Steve Dolby claimed today: “We’re the best team in the league.”
And he hopes the Moatmen prove a point tomorrow by putting more space between themselves and Chasetown – the side Dolby regards as the most serious threat to Rovers’ challenge for their second successive West Midlands League titles.

It will be the fifth meeting between the clubs this season and so far Rovers have shaded it with one win amidst three other drawn games.

Dolby said: “They managed to get a point at our place in the league, but after two draws we finally managed to beat them in the second replay in the League Cup.”

But he expects the South Staffordshire side to provide a stern test of a Rovers team revitalised by last Saturday’s 4-0 crushing of Rocester.

Said Dolby: “Chasetown either seem to draw 0-0 or win 1-0 and they’ve conceded only 10 goals in 18 games, so obviously they’ll be a very difficult side to break down.

“But there have been very few games this season when we’ve failed to score and if we can keep it tight ourselves there’s no reason why we shouldn’t get the right result.”

Chasetown are the only team who can overhaul Rovers by turning games in hand into points, but they face a daunting fixture backlog and defeat would seriously harm their chances of deposing Gresley as champions.

Dolby said: “It’s a big game for both clubs, but we were delighted with the way we played last week and we’ll be looking for more of the same.”
