Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood was still enjoying his “sweet revenge” over Paget Rangers this week when he turned his thoughts to the only other side in the West Midlands League still capable of that rare feat – a league double over the table topping Moatmen.
Rovers travel to Lye tomorrow with memories of their only home defeat of the season still fresh – despite the fact that it came as long ago as August 24.I Gresley’s worse start to a campaign for several seasons they found themselves dumped 2-1 by Lye, who have maintained a title interest and pose a serious threat tomorrow to an unbeaten run now stretches back over an impressive 10 games.
Said Northwood this morning: “It’s a double revenge mission for us but it’s one we’re looking forward to. We’ve had a few injury problems of late but they’re beginning to sort themselves out now.
“We haven’t perhaps been winning games as convincingly as people would like us to but we’ve scored 50-odd goals in the league this season which is more than anyone else. We’ve set our standards and as long as I’m around we will stick to them.
“Everyone we play wants to knock us off our perch and that’s been the case for two or three seasons.
“Teams get men behind the ball to make things difficult for us but we’re used to that now. If we can go there tomorrow and win 1-0 that will be good enough for me.”
Rovers expect to have defenders Stuart Evans and Martin Dick and stickers Paul Acklam and Kieron Smith available after injury but luckless Scott Elliott looks set to be sidelined yet again with a knee injury.
A tackle by Rocester’s John Meyer put the Long Eaton based 24-year-old out for eight weeks earlier in the season then a cynical assault by Stapenhill’s Tony Coppinger put him back on the treatment table for a further eight months before his comeback had lasted 10 minutes.
On Wednesday the jinx struck again when Elliott, making his full comeback for a third time, injured a knee in the clash with Paget’s Carlton Miller in which the unfortunate Miller broke his leg.
