Gresley Rovers coach Steve Dolby says he hopes that the club will follow the example of league clubs and find a new manager from within its current set up.
And he also believes he is the man to fill the void left behind when Frank Northwood steps down at the end of the season.“Someone has got to do it and I think it is better to have someone already in the set up who knows how things work. Frank is going to be a hard act to follow but I’d like to be his successor,” he said.
Dolby, a former Burton Albion player, joined the Moatmen in 1985 only months after the arrival of Northwood and was a player before becoming club coach.
The duo of Dolby and Northwood has worked wonders on transforming the Rovers team over the past seven years from also-rans to Wembley finalists and league champions.
A key factor in the success has been the bad guy/nice guy team talks. Explained Dolby: “Frank comes in and gets at the players, telling them a few home truths and things then leaves it to me to calm them down again. It has worked well.”
Providing Rovers remain West Midlands Premier Division champions, they stand a good chance of gaining promotion to the Beazer Homes League where Dolby believes the team will be able to hold their own.
“With the present side I would be disappointed if we didn’t finish in the top six,” he said.
