Gresley Rovers begin a run of three consecutive Saturday home games tomorrow with manager Frank Northwood calling for a maximum points return.
Saturday’s 7-1 win at West Bromwich Town supported the claim that Rovers’ current league position is a false one.

And that is backed up by the fact that Gresley, despite languishing in the ninth position in the West Midlands table, have dropped fewer points in their six outings so far than any other side in the division.

Leaders Stourport Swifts, who come to the Moat Ground in two week’s time, had dropped fewer until they crashed 3-0 at home to Rushall Olympic in midweek – but that was their 10th game in the league with most sides having played at least seven or eight.

Northwood says the only way for Gresley to achieve a true standing in the table is to win those outstanding games.

Actually playing them is one problem, with Gresley’s midweek fixture larder looking bare. And the need to stage another league cup replay with Chasetown after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw doesn’t help matters.

Points in the bag, then, are a priority – but Gresley won’t find them easy to come by when Wednesfield visit the Moat tomorrow.

In addition to recent departure Steve Astley, Wednesfield boast a string of other Rovers old boys in their line-up – all of whom will be equally keen to put one over on their former team-mates should they play tomorrow.

They include defenders Dave Beattie, Carl Nicklin and Peter Perry, midfielders Paul “Dixie” Dearne and Ian Wells and striker Keith Hill.

Despite such an array of talent, though, Wednesfield have made an indifferent start to the season and were humbled 3-1 at home in the Vase on Saturday by Evesham.
