Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood last night launched an outspoken attack on “turncoat” twosome Andy Moore and John Bottomley.
The pair are the only Gresley Players from last season not to resign, prompting Northwood to storm: “I don’t know how they’ve got the neck to leave the club after what we’ve done without even speaking to us first.”Bottomley has joined local rivals Rocester, while Moore has linked up with another West Midlands League club, Wednesfield.
Said Northwood: “It was the old, old story of saying how loyal are these fellows. You find out the true ones at the end of the day.
“It’s no good saying these two weren’t in the side. It’s a matter of winning a shirt at Gresley. Nobody is first choice.”
Northwood, however, said that all remaining players from last season’s first-team squad had already signed for the new campaign.
The club will not be running a reserve side and Northwood said he hoped to reach a working arrangement with the other senior clubs in the area, including Stapenhill and Bolehall Swifts, who will be jointly managed next season by former Gresley striker Andy Maddocks and Colin Middleton.
