Rovers wait

Gresley Rovers plan to make a major announcement about their future next week.
Rovers, still licking their wounds following their rejection by the Beazer Homes League, had a three-hour committee meeting last night.

And chairman Peter hall declared today: “We have sorted things out and the picture is looking a lot brighter.

“There are still one or two loose ends to tie up, however, so it may the middle of next week before I can make a statement.”

Rovers are known to have discussed the possibility of moving away from their Moat Street home and talks could also have centred on whether to appeal to the FA over their third successive failure to gain promotion.

Club officials are particularly concerned about the implications of the Beazer statement that the “geography of the site” may prove a permanent obstruction in the promotion stakes.

But Beazer Homes League secretary Dennis Strudwick today insisted he and his colleagues had done everything they could to help Gresley meet the criteria.

“It’s not our fault, for instance, that they have a stand that overhangs the playing area; it’s not our fault they have failed to secure the necessary six-year lease and it’s not our fault that the improvements they have carried out have exposed further shortcomings.”
