Just great, Gresley
Story courtesy of Sporting Soap Box - Burton Mail
A poem by Donald B Thompson, Swadlincote.
Lets add “The great” to Gresley RoversTo make our footballing team one of the best,
For with Frank Northwood there to guide them
Then our brave boys will surely do the rest.
With our staunch football fans behind them,
The red and whites will fight to win the ball
And with Lady Luck beside them
They’ll be greatly feared by one and all.
Our loyal committee is united,
Officials, groundsmen, men who take the cash,
For while they stay there, undivided,
Gresley Rovers will never, ever, crash.
Now, let us toast our staunch supporters
Who lend their voices very loud and clear
‘Please bring your wives, your sons and daughters
Along, our clubhouse serves the finest beer.’
Bring on the Oldbury’s, Lyes and Rocesters,
It’s ‘Goodbye Banks’s, hi Beazer.’ Goin’ up.
We may not yet play teams like Gloucester
But may just meet and beat ‘em in the Cup.
And if we fail to gain promotion
All we can say, ‘they tried their very best’
But then, there’s still another season
To forge ahead, in front of all the rest.
The old Moat Ground has seen some changes
Since first encounter, many years ago
And if the famous face has faded,
The honoured name has never been forgot.
So, though the memories still linger,
It’s to the future that we have to look
Here’s health and wealth to Gresley Rovers
Our local soccer team, “the best of luck.”
Man the Moat with your men, Gresley Rovers
On the ball here since 1882,
Let’s put the bad times behind us
Look, see the sun breaking through, it’s shinin’
Fill the field with your fans, Gresley Rovers,
Three cheers for the good times ahead,
As forward we go, in the future they’ll know
Of our great Gresley team, white and red.
