Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood predicted this week that four more victories would almost ensure the Banks’s League title finished up at the Moat Ground this season.
It seemed an optimistic claim at the time, with 13 games left. But Rovers won at Oldswinford on Monday and brought a point back from Darlaston on Wednesday to bring the title that little bit closer and to reduce the number of sides that can overtake them at the top of the table to just eight.Lye Town – one of Gresley’s chief challengers earlier in the season – dropped out of the running when they failed to beat Rushall last night while two of Rovers other main rivals, Oldbury and Chasetown, did themselves no favours by making a 1-1 draw.
In fact, to be absolutely certain of the title, Gresley need to pick up another 14 points – five wins from 11 games – to beyond the reach of closest challengers Oldbury, whose maximum possible is now 92.
If we stray into the realms of hypothesis just for a moment, and assume that teams will get an average of one point per game against other top eight sides, and win all their remaining games this would be the standing:
Gresley 100, Oldbury 88, Darlston 81, Ilkeston 81, Wednesfield 79, West Brom Town 78, Halesowen Harriers 77, Chasetown 77.
