Two goals from on-loan striker Martin Devaney gave Gresley Rovers another vital Banks’s League win at the Moat Ground last night.
Watched by an 801 crowd the table-topping Moatmen beat title rivals Darlaston 3-1 with Steve Adcock chipping in with the third goal. But with strikers Paul Acklam and Carl Rathbone already sidelined by injury Gresley suffered a further setback when top scorer Kieron Smith sustained a first half rib injury which will require precautionary X-rays today.
Rovers boss Frank Northwood gives his first team squad a break for tonight’s Evans Halshaw Floodlit Trophy visit of Leicester United (7.30pm).
He said after last nights’ win: “We’re looking forward to Saturday’s League Cup semi-final second leg against Chasetown now.”
However, the game gives defenders Russell Walton, Dean Page and Martin Dick the chance to strengthen their claims for first team places. Meanwhile, another defender John Bottomley, continues his comeback from a long-term injury lay-off.
