Northwood stubs it out

Reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase might have frayed Gresley Rovers nerves a little – but as far as Frank Northwood is concerned the club’s success has been healthy exercise.
The word is that the only person in the Midlands who isn’t pleased about Rovers’ run is Northwood’s tobacconist! For Northwood “a 60 cigarettes a day man” at the start of the season has quit the weed in Rovers march towards Wembley – and vows not to light up again until his team steps out onto the hallowed North London turf.
“It’s three weeks since I had one,” says Northwood. I can get through 60 a day sometimes and 20 during a match. The lads in the dugout are very pleased about it – they say they can see the game now!
“The only person who’s really suffered is Steve Astley – he usually asks me for a cigarette at the end of the game. I’m not saying I haven’t felt like one – it’s not easy to give up after you’ve smoked for as long as I have. But it wouldn’t look very good, stepping out at Wembley with a fag on. If we get there I might have a cigar!”
