Wolverhampton United vs Gresley Rovers
Second spot hopes fade - Burton Mail
Bearing in made what was at stake, this was a strangely lethargic display by Gresley and they now have to depend on other clubs dropping points if they are to clinch runners-up spot in the Banks's League for the second successive season,
Neither goalkeeper was tested in the first 15 minutes, but then a move involving Stevens and Atkinson saw the latter putting a 20-yard effort which Mastrovbueno did well to push over the bar.
Rovers were desperately unlucky not to take the lead midway through the first half when the ball appeared to cross the line but the referee turned a deaf ear to their appeals.
Generally, though, both side were struggling to put any worthwhile moves together, although their cause was not helped by a swirling wind and an atrocious playing surface.
Former Gresley striker Reg Priest was in the Wolverhampton line-up and early in the second half he put a shot just wide and this was followed by a Snaith effort going narrowly over.
Rovers then had strong appeals for a penalty for handball offence turned down, but Wolverhampton immediately broke to the other end and Priest was again only marginally off target with his shot.
Overall though, it was a game of few real incidents and a poor Gresley performance meant they failed to take advantage of a far from impressive Wolverhampton outfit and gain the so vital maximum points.
