Three Vital Points For Rovers
The morning had been quite bright and sunny but as the referee blew his whistle to begin the game the sunshine had disappeared, and the afternoon turned cold and dull.
Unfortunately, there was nothing to brighten things from the first half as both sides struggled to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Before kick off the two teams were only separated by goal difference with Rovers having the better of the two in the bottom half of the league table.
Manager James Jepson was hit by more injuries and absences before the game and was without the suspended Jack Andrew, Kane Lee, Jenson Cooper, Nathan Banton, Louis Anthony and Jamie Sleigh.
The visitors started strongly and were soon forcing a good save out of Rovers debutant keeper Harvey Adams.
Unfortunately for Wisbech they lost their captain Kyle Barker after just eight minutes with an injury that ended with him taking a trip to A & E. He was replaced by William Langford.
Rovers began to take charge with Ethan Goodfellow making a good run down the left before finding Liam Kavanagh with a pass, but the final shot went wide.
The home side went close again moments later. This time it was Alby Lansdowne who made his way into the area and put a great ball which Jack Bostock got his head to but Wisbech keeper William Lakin diving full length to his left pushed the ball away for a corner.
Dylan Hunniford then tested Lakin with a low shot before the referee brought the first half to a close.
Rovers made a change at the break with Carrick Dunkley replacing Micah Tomlin both of whom were making their debut.
More pressure from the home side saw them take the lead on 59 minutes and a good goal it was too. A long ball into the area from the right which took a deflection which lifted it high into the goal area which was punched away by Lakin.
Hunniford was on the edge of the area, and he had time to pick his spot before smashing an unstoppable shot which left the keeper helpless as the ball flew past him and into the back of the net.
Rovers went close to doubling their advantage on 67 minutes. A corner from the left by Hunniford found Bostock who was unfortunate to see his header bounce off the crossbar.
For the final ten minutes or so Rovers had to defend hard as their opponents fought hard to try and get a leveller, but they held out and defended well to gain a valuable and fully deserved three points and a clean sheet.
