Rovers Dig Deep For A Point
Written by Adam Cockerill
A resilient Gresley Rovers were unlucky not to grab all three points today at Steel Park stadium against Corby Town.
James Harrison thought he had grabbed all three points for the Moatmen in the dying moments with seeingly the last kick of the game, but the ref played over seven minutes of added time, which allowed Corby to have a chance to equalise which they did.
The first half was end to end with neither team not really creating much bar the two goals, but Rovers always looking dangerous on the counter.
The second half was the same as the first with both teams battling it out with Gresley looking to break on the counter with Corby dictating possession.
First big chance of the game fell to Corby Town inside four minutes as a dangerous corner found Tristan Thompson-Matthews whose header was cleared off the line.
Gresley Rovers took the lead inside 11th minute as Alex Morris took matters into his own hands as a long throw was cleared his into the path of his feet outside the box and he danced his way past the Corby defence and coolly slotted it past Jason Alexander in the Corby goal.
Corby Town had a great chance to equalise 10 minutes later as a long throw found Tsaguim Florian at the back post but his first time shot went well over the bar.
Corby Town’s pressure eventually led to an equaliser in the 29th minute as a long throw was flicked on by Corby captain Michael Jacklin at the front post for Callum Milns at the back post to head past Lewis Fenney.
Corby bossed possession in the opening 45 but lacked any real threat bar the equaliser to trouble Fenney’s goal, and Rovers always looked a threat on the counter.
Second half began and Corby started the better of the two teams, with long throws and corners causing problems for Fenney in his goal.
The Moatmen really struggled to get out of their own half in the early openings of the second half but started to get a foot hold in the game as Shaq Leachman-Whittingham was looking to create a spark 15 minutes into the second half.
Gresley thought they had scored a second minutes later as Bekir Halil played in substitute James Harrison and his ball across goal found Izak Reid, but Harrison was adjudged to be offside.
Corby should have scored a second with 20 minutes remaining as Florian played the ball into the corridor of uncertainty and substitute Hilton Arthur’s first time shot blazed over the bar.
Rovers had the ball in the net again with 15 minutes to go as Reid coolly finished past the keeper but the linesman flagged offside.
10 minutes to go and the Moatmen were creating the better chances as they look to slow the game down and catch the hosts on the break.
The next chance fell to Reid whose shot across goal needed a tap in by a red shirt but no one was there and Corby cleared their line.
Gresley were really hanging on as Corby produced a late flurry of pressure with Florian looking to win the game all by himself but Morris and Mason Frizelle are stood firm getting rid of any pressure that came their way.
On the counter attack, James Harrison, who had looked dangerous since replacing Jonathan Letford in the second half, found himself with no pressure on the edge of the box and drilled a sweet shot into the bottom right corner.
However, Gresley hearts were broken minutes later, with bizarrely over six minutes being played by the referee, and Corby equalised thanks to Hilton Arthur following some interplay with Florian.
