Marske Show Their Pedigree
Thanks to Ian Collins
Gresley travelled to Marske who were unbeaten at home for over 12 months and last season's Northern League Champions pipping Morpeth to the title.
Gresley were without the suspended Dexter Morris-Clarke, Albert & Harry Lansdowne, Luke Morgan and Jamie Barrett.
Marske started well and took the lead after 5 minutes when Curtis Round fired in a shot from 25 yards which took a wicked deflection to beat the dive of Oliver Fairbrother.
In the 16th minute Fairbrother made a good save down to his right to prevent danger man Jamie Owens from increasing the home side's lead. Owens scored two goals in the space of three minutes to put Gresley under severe pressure.
In the 25th minute Fairbrother pulled off another good save to prevent Glen Butterworth from scoring.
Marske were playing neat controlled football and went 4-0 ahead when Owens curled in a shot from 20 yards to complete his hat trick.
The first half had been controlled by Marske with football equal to Morpeths.
Gresley came out for the second half and looked a better side and pulled a goal back after 52 minutes Callum Riddell scoring with a shot from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner of the net after good play by Kane Lee.
Fairbrother then made two good saves in quick succession from Jamie Owens and Matthew Waters.
In the 66th Martin Smyth was just off target with a shot from 20 yards. It had been a much better second half performance by Gresley against an impressive Marske side.
