Scholars On Top At Chasetown
There were no fireworks for Gresley this afternoon but most of Gresley's travelling faithful would surely have to agree that the score flattered Chasetown in an entertaining game at the Scholars Ground.
Yes, they deserved all three points but the margin of that victory didn't reflect the game. Two very clumsily conceded penalties stretched the score out of proportion.
The performance was not the best of the season but it was certainly not the worst with Lincoln coming to mind.
Chasetown started strongly with Josh Ruff racing in but firing his shot over the bar. However, they took the lead when Gresley failed to deal with the ball which was laid back to Peter Till who took his chance well firing a low shot past visiting keeper Rob Peet.
Gresley almost went further behind on 17 minutes when Josh Egginton hesitated with the ball and was robbed but the final shot was blocked by the keeper.
Chasetown did double their advantage on 26 minutes with an outstanding strike - if he meant it! The ball came out to Matt Wood on the left who hit an unstoppable shot past Peet and into the far top corner.
Cortney Meade went close to grabbing a goal back with a shot from distance that went the wrong side of the upright while Wood fizzed a shot over the bar at the other end.
Gresley then had two decent chances just before the half time break. The first came from Meade whose well struck shot was straight at Curtis Pond followed two minutes later Pearson Mwanyongo made a dart down the left but his shot also went straight at Pond.
The visitors began the second half on top with Meade shooting at the keeper, Mwanyongo having a shot parried and Tendai Chitiza having his shot saved by Pond.
Chasetown's third goal came from some poor defending in the box. A cross should have been cleared but Mitch Piggon was allowed to rise the highest and nod the ball to the base of the far post where James Dance slid in to poke the ball home.
Simon Brown almost added another for the home side but his low shot was well saved by Peet but the game was as good as dead five minutes later. Ruff turned Ryan Walker just inside the area but the defender inexplicably barged him down giving referee Andrew Dallison no choice but to award the spot kick which was duly dispatched by Piggon.
There was a glimmer of hope two minutes later when a good move ended with Mwanyongo racing forward before hitting a fierce low shot past Pond.
Matt Melbourne was unlucky to see his effort saved but on 87 minutes Gresley scored a second, was a fight back on the cards? A corner from the left by substitute Ben Harris was met by Walker who atoned for his earlier error by powering his header into the net.
Substitute Jordan Wakeling's clumsy challenge saw another penalty conceded which former Moatman Jack Langston put away to give the score a somewhat false look about it and leaving manager Damion Beckford-Quailey almost speechless after the game.
