Pre-Season Friendly
Owen Street, Coalville
Tuesday, 2nd August 2016, 7.45pm
Ravens Edge The Friendly
Even though this was a pre-season match it was always going to be a competitive derby as all matches between these two sides.
This would be another good test for the Gresley side after good games against Port Vale and Burton Albion.
Coalville were the first to attack and Lee Torr was just off target after being put through by Nathan Watson.
In the 8th minute Tom Allan in the Gresley goal pulled off a good save from an Alex Troke free kick.
Gresley began to come more into the game and the pace of Chitiza, Mwanyongo and Meade was causing problems for the Coalville defence.
Coalville took the lead after 16 minutes when Watson picked up the ball just outside the penalty area cut inside and stoked a low shot into the far corner of the net from 12 yards.
In the 20th minute the only real flashpoint of the game took place when a strong challenge from Jarrad Holmes on Ben Harris caused the Gresley players to react and several players from both sides ended up in a pushing and shoving melee that eventually was sorted out by the referee and the game continued.
In the 30th minute Allan pulled off another good save to prevent Massiah McDonald from increasing Coalville's lead.
Minutes later Gresley had their first goal scoring opportunity good play by Harris put Pearson Mwanyongo through down the right and his cross which was destined for Courtney Meade was cut out by Dean Freeman for a corner kick.
In the 38th minute Allan made another excellent save to prevent McDonald from scoring.
This had been a hard fought 45 minutes but in all fairness it was the home side that had created the better chances and were good value for their half time lead.
The second half was fairly even with both sides having their fair share of possession but both defences were standing firm and goal scoring chances were very few and it was not until the 90th minute that Coalville scored their second goal when Alex Troke curled a direct free kick into the top left hand corner of the net.
This had been a good test for Gresley and lessons would be learned from this game as the start of the season draws near.
