Moors The Merrier At The Moat
National Conference North side Solihull Moors proved a little too strong for the Moatmen although the game was closer than the score might suggest.
Moors started off strongly with a shot going straight at Gresley keeper Ryan Swift but then struggled to carve out any clear cut chances.
That could also be said for the home side and it wasn't until the closing minutes of the first half that they had a half chance when Alex Steadman raced down the right but his shot from an acute angle was blocked by the keeper at his near post.
Right on the whistle to end the first half Moors grabbed the lead when a corner was headed home at the far post.
Within a couple of minutes of the second half starting Gresley were almost level when Lucas Harrison hit a scorcher of a shot that whistled fractionally the wrong side of the near post.
The home side went close again this time Martin Smyth laid the ball back to Steadman on the edge of the area but his shot went over the bar.
Moors doubled their advantage when a short back pass from Kallum Keane was pounced on before the ball was lifted over the advancing Swift. Gresley hit back with Jack Langston launching his shot over the bar.
The visitors made wholesale changes but one of the changes for Gresley made an instant impact causing the Moors defence problems. Ryan King slipped the ball through for Steadman but the final shot lacked enough pace to beat the keeper diving to his left.
King was the provider again for Steadman this time a cross from the right which the front man whose flicked header came back off the far post.
Steadman was unlucky again two minutes later. Dereece Gardner's cross from the right found Steadman but it was the keeper who denied him a goal pushing the ball away for a corner.
At the other end Swift saved Harrison's blushes as the defender's woefully short backpass handed Moors a glorious chance but the keeper did well to deny the goal with a fine block.
Substitute Chris Richards dribbled his way into Moors' area before laying the ball back for Langston whose shot, heading for the top corner, was well saved by the visitors' substitute keeper.
With Gresley pressing a quick break down the right saw Moors add goal number three with a low shot into the bottom far corner of the net.
