Gresley A Spot Unlucky Again
For the second game running Gresley were denied a share of the points as Chasetown grabbed the winner with just minutes remaining in what had been an entertaining game with both sides playing some good football at the Scholars ground.
Mark Goodfellow had given the Moatmen the lead from the spot only for Chasetown to level just before the break. The winner came six minutes from the end when the home side were awarded a very soft penalty which Simon Brown dispatched comfortably.
Gresley were short of strikers for this game with Dean Oliver still recovering from a bout of sickness which kept him out of Saturday's game and Royce Turville who will probably miss quite a few games due to a knee injury.
Defenders Jamie Barrett was also absent due to a knee injury and recently signed Mitch Hanson had some fluid on his knee meaning he also missed the game seeing Hayden John taking the right back role.
Chasetown came out of the blocks quickly putting Gresley under pressure with defender John Guy going into the referee's notebook with just four minutes on the clock.
The visiting keeper needed to be alert when Simon Brown hit a low shot which was turned away. Ross Etheridge was in action soon afterwards this time making a fine save grabbing the ball as it headed to the top corner again from Brown's shot.
The first chance Gresley had was blocked but just after the half hour mark Gresley took the lead. Kieran O'Connell burst into the area only to be brought down from behind giving referee Mark Billingham no choice but to point to the spot. Goodfellow converted sending Dan Watson the wrong way.
That seemed to fire up the home side even more and just before the break they were level when a run from Nicholas Wellecomme ended with a low short which squeezed under the body of diving Etheridge.
Seconds later Chasetown should have taken the lead when the impressive Wellecomme made another run down the right before cutting inside but instead of smashing a shot at goal he chose to square the ball for his team-mate Grant Beckett who embarrassingly fired over the gaping goal from close in.
The first half ended with Chasetown going close again with Wellecomme planting his header just wide of the far post.
Gresley faced more pressure at the start of the second half but they were the first to go close when Goodfellow curled a shot just past the far post with Watson struggling to get across his goal. Seconds later a good footballing move from the visitors deserved more but Sam Grice's thunderous effort whistled over the bar.
For the final half hour or so Chasetown turned the screw but some resolute defending seemed to be earning Gresley a share of the points. Etheridge did well to get down quickly to save well down to his left side but the death blow came with minutes left on the clock. Brown ran into the area went to ground when got the faintest of touches from Guy and yet again Gresley were to be denied a share of the spoils as Brown himself converted the spot kick.
With virtually the last kick of the game Gresley went close to grabbing an equaliser when a fine low cross from O'Connell into the box evaded the finishing touch from a team mate.
Although it could be argued that Chasetown deserved their win tonight but Gresley will play a lot worse and come away with all three points.
