Boatmen Sunk By Gresley
Gresley's Marc Goodfellow kept up his rich vein of scoring by capping off a victory at The Ron Steele Sports Ground against Dunkirk.
The victory means that Gresley have now gone seventeen games unbeaten in all competitions and were awarded the Moldwel Team of the Month for December adding to the award they won for November.
James Jepson opened the scoring with Royce Turville adding the second before Goodfellow completed the scoring for Gresley. Tom Maddison claimed a late consolation for the home side.
Gary Norton, without the services of the suspended pair Rob Spencer and Adam Betteridge kept with the same side that overcame Heather St Johns on Boxing Day and on a very heavy pitch were made to work hard for their three points despite not looking under too much pressure.
After a cagy first fifteen minutes or so the game came alive when Goodfellow's free kick found Jepson whose first attempt was palmed back by Dunkirk keeper James Mountain only to find the head of Jepson who nodded the ball into the net.
Within a few minutes Kyle Bryant went close flashing a shot just over the bar while at the other end Maddison was also going close for the Boatmen.
Gresley increased their lead with the best move of the first half. Jordi Gough made a fine run down the left before sending a low cross into the box were Turville running in at the far post was able to slide the ball home.
With the sun setting and the temperature falling like a stone Dunkirk came out for the second half looking determined to get back into the game and they almost did within a couple of minutes when Maddison fired a low shot just wide of the far post but it was Gresley who almost grabbed a third goal.
Jepson slung over a corner from the right and Michael Nottingham's powerful header was cleared off the line by Ross McCaughey but Oliver blasted the rebound wide.
Another good move saw Oliver go close again. The striker made a good run down the right and after avoiding two tackles from defenders cut into the area but his final shot grazed the outside of the near post.
The visitors had a very good shout for a penalty as the ball clearly struck the outstretched hand of a defender but the appeal was turned down but they didn't have long to wait for their third goal. Oliver picked out Turville who in turn flicked the ball forward for Goodfellow who coolly finished the move by curling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Dunkirk's consolation goal came deep into time added on. Awarded a free kick just outside the area Maddison expertly curled his shot into the top corner giving Gresley keeper Gary Hateley no chance but the goal deserved more than the deathly silence that greeted the well struck shot from the sparse home support.
