Derby Junction vs Gresley Rovers
Rovers travelled to the Vulcan Ground at Derby to play Derby Junction in the Derbyshire Senior League on 26th October 1895.
(In the 1887-1888 season Junction surprisingly reached the semi-finals of the English Cup - now the FA Cup. To get there they beat St Lukes, Rotherham Town, Lockwood Brothers, Chick and amazingly Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in front of 4,000 fans in the Arboretum Ground. They were beaten 3-0 by West Brom at Stoke. Junction sadly disbanded on Christmas Day 1895 due to the growing popularity of nearby Derby County).
The gate at the Vulcan ground was described as a small assembly. Rovers scored from a corner which was taken by Jones, Udall was handily placed and he made no mistake.
A second goal by Jones was allowed by the referee Mr Poyser of Swadlincote although the Junction men adjudged it to be offside.
Half Time 2-0
During the second half some very rough play was witnessed and Rovers' winger Fiens was ordered to leave the field but it was hard to suppose that he kicked his opponent deliberately.
C Richards added two more goals midway through the half.
Rovers: Tate, Fox, Topliss, Archer, Wright, J Richards, Udall, Jones, C Richards, Sharpe, Fiens.
