Arnold vs Gresley Rovers
Arnold 2 - 1 Gresley Rovers
Rovers travelled to the Nottingham suburbs to play Arnold in a Central Combination League game on the 23rd November 1901.
This was the first ever meeting between the two sides and Rovers sent a strong side that included their latest captures Harold Sabine, Charlie Ward and Rollings.
Arnold opened with a quick move but Joe Kinsey saved well. Wileman gave Rovers a twelfth minute lead with a well-placed shot that crept in low down.
Seconds later Hunt equalised for the Arnold. The homestars pressed again and Kinsey again saved well, he then threw the ball out to Rollings and 'Sugar' Kirby who went clear but they hesitated and the chance was gone. The interval arrived with the score at 1-1.
Arnold attacked again and Kinsey thwarted them once more with a fine save after a corner kick.
The Gresley goal had another narrow escape but the forwards were checked by the Rovers defence in which Sabine was outstanding.
A free kick for Rovers gained no advantage and near the end Arnold got the winner when Hollingsworth defeated Kinsey in a goalmouth scramble.
Rovers: Kinsey, Jones, Adams, Sabine, Solomon, Fearn, Kirby, Wileman, Rollings, Harrison, Ward.
