Bashley vs Gresley Rovers
Dismal Gresley collapsed under an early onslaught from doomed Bashley to complete a wretched weekend.
Rovers' performance was a total let down, especially for the fans who had paid for overnight accommodation to witness the weekend double-header or, worse still, made two trips to the south coast on consecutive days.
The Moatmen simply didn't start playing until Bashley were two goals up.
The home side, already resigned to making the drop at the end of the season, pushed forward from the kick off and Rovers simply collapsed.
Winger Jeremy Stagg set up the first, bursting past a string of half-hearted challenges and driving in a right wing cross that Phil Stone hammered in at the near post.
David Holmes twice fired speculative efforts off target as Rovers sought instant redress but with 10 minutes gone they found themselves two down.
Bob Aston's clearance was returned straight into the danger zone and Stagg took advantage of Rovers' lack of effective tackling to fire right footed past the keeper from 12 yards.
Graham Rigg saw a goalbound drive blocked and keeper Nick Flower, playing with six stitches in a head wound suffered playing a game earlier in the day, tipped over a header from teammate Darren Powell after an Ian Straw corner but that just about summed up Rovers' attacking efforts for the first half.
Boss Steve Dolby read the riot act at half time and Rovers responded by resuming in a clearly determined mood but Bashley were no less resolved to achieve their third win in four games.
Gradually Rovers' fire died, and after Martin Devaney had made good contact with a Straw free kick only to see the sting taken off his header by a defender, Bashley began to threaten to increase their guests' humiliation.
Simon Gowans fired wide of an open goal after Aston's punched clearance fell at his feet, Lee Walker was just off target with an overhead kick from skipper Jimmy Sheppard's long throw then substitute Dave Perrett, left with just Aston to beat by Peter Morrell's cross saw the keeper brilliantly save his close range shot.
That was all Rovers' crestfallen followers had to cheer about all afternoon as they were left to contemplate the enigma of their team thrashing the league leaders one week and then being humbled by a team from the opposite end of the table.
