Gresley Rovers vs Morris Sports
A crowd of just over 1,000 (receipts £23.7s) saw Rovers beat Morris Sports 4-1 in a Leicestershire Senior League clash at the Moat Ground on the 21st September 1946.
The 'hero' of the afternoon was Middleton the visiting goalkeeper, who pulled off several tremendous saves and reports indicate that Rovers would have reached double figures but for his efforts.
John Staley gave us an early lead when he scored with a header after a clinical shot from Alf Corner. Les Marshment made it two nil in the twentieth minute.
Sports had their best spell of the half and they pulled one back close to half time. Eric Rose was adjudged to have tripped Bryers and the penalty was converted.
Staley restored our two goal advantage early in the second half and then after being thwarted several times by the keeper Staley finally completed a fine hat trick after a rebound fell perfectly for him.
Three weeks later we completed the double when we won the return game by 5-0 (Marshment 2, Staley, Bowler & Mitchell got the goals).
Line-up: Bradford, Parker, Cope, Bowler, Rose, Brown, Staley, Marshment, Corner, Harrison, Marston.
Referee: Mr B Boast of Hinckley.
