Gresley Rovers vs Atherstone Town
Gresley Rovers 6 - 2 Atherstone Town
Our best win of the 1957-1958 season was against our local rivals Atherstone Town at the Moat Ground on 16th April 1958.
The teams who lined up for this bottom of the table clash were:
Rovers: Lightfoot, Cashmore, Millin, Sinclair, Parr, Hallam, Gutteridge, Wilson, Bradley, McLaren, Aston.
Town: Mullholland, Gaylor, Duggins, Davis, Cahill, Kelly, Hollis, R Hollis, Lees, Beeson, Walker.
Rovers played good football for the whole of the ninety minutes in this Birmingham League Division One game against visitors Town who were made to look an inferior team.
The scoreline was a fair reflection of the game in which Rovers took the lead in the fifth minute through Bradley who lobbed the ball past the advancing keeper and into the net.
Two minutes later the visitors equalised when Cashmore slipped and Owen fired home. Good work by Aston set up Wilson and scored with a good drive. Atherstone equalised once more through Davies from a pass from Duggins.
Further good football from Wilson set up Bradley for his second early in the second half. Wilson then made it 4-2 and two minutes later he completed a fine hat trick.
Gutteridge scored number six for the Rovers in the last minute of the game after Bradley had a shot and seen the ball mishandled by the keeper, Gutteridge raced onto the dropped ball and cracked it home.
This victory lifted Rovers out of the bottom place but they were relegated to Division Two along with Atherstone Town
