Anstey Nomads vs Gresley Rovers
Gresley Rovers visited the pleasant Nomads ground on Cropston Lane in the Leicester suburbs for a Central Alliance Premier Division game.
Nomads: Saley, F Marsden, E Marsden, Brown, Allen, Berry, Crook, Pratt, Coulter, Cook, Follows.
Rovers: Holland, Parry, Burton, Woodburn, King, Greaves, Mitchell, Hall, Liddle, Insley, Boulton.
Gresley deserved their win over Nomads although only for a while in the second half when they had opened up a three one lead, were they really in command of the game.
Johnny Boulton gave Gresley the lead after ten minutes when he shot hard and low but Allen could have cleared it but left it for his keeper but unsighted him and Saley was too late in diving. Four minutes later Cook took the ball through on his own and unleashed a terrific shot which beat Holland to equalise.
Tricky work by Boulton who was a big worry to the Anstey defence put Gresley back into the lead with a 33rd minute goal, when he took a free kick which he rocketed into the roof of the net from just outside the area.
After the resumption Anstey, with the advantage of the wind, went close to equalising with Brown, Berry and Coulter all going close but in the 64th minute inside right John Insley weaved his way through the Anstey defence and scored with an unstoppable shot to give Gresley a three-one lead.
With this lead Gresley began to get on top and played delightful football, but Anstey were still not finished and 4 minutes from the end Pratt neatly headed home a corner from Cook.
Anstey went all out in the last few minutes for a share of the points but Gresley held out and deservedly collected the spoils. It was hard to single out any individual in a smooth moving Gresley side who played as a team but Boulton, Insley and Liddle shone in the attack while Parry and King were solid defenders.
