Gresley Rovers vs Chesterfield
Rovers start the hard way - Andy Parker - Burton Mail
Gresley Rovers were given a rigorous pre-season examination by Chesterfield at the Moat Ground on Saturday in the Centenary Rosebowl.
Starting the game with 10 players who played regular Fourth Division football last season, Chesterfield's fitness and teamwork were a daunting opposition for a Rovers side shorn of key men.
Chesterfield took the lead after 10 minutes when winger Lee Turnbull scored from 20 yards after Rovers had failed to clear a cross from Dave Caldwell.
Gresley's best moments came before half time when Paul Acklam fired a first time effort just over from 18-yards and Steve Adcock beat two defenders but crossed just behind Craig Weston.
Keeper Bob Aston produced saves in each half to deny first Caldwell, who had run straight through the Gresley defence, then in the second half one of six Chesterfield substitutes headed goalwards from point-blank range.
Another substitute, Steve Williams, settled the ownership of the Rosebowl with a spectacular volley on 50 minutes that left Aston helpless.
