Manager's Notes

1st January 2009
Gary Norton Hello to you all and a very "HAPPY NEW YEAR" to each and every one of you. 2008 has turned out to be quite a year for us all at Gresley Rovers Football Club.

For many of the wrong reasons we shall remember this last twelve-months but the main thing is that we are starting to come through our problems and are very much focused on the future rather than the past. With the likes of Mark Harrison, Barry North, Gary Brockway, George Sutton et al on the board we are in very safe and capable hands and whatever happens lets hope 2009 is a better one for us all connected with the club.

Today we welcome our great friends and rivals from Leicestershire in the form of Shepshed Dynamo to the Moat Ground for the return game in the now traditional seasonal double header. In previous years we have had very good results against our opponents today.

However - even before our now well documented problems became public knowledge, Shepshed had made a blistering start to the campaign that has made everyone sit up and take notice of them this season.

Todays game will be a huge challenge for our recently assembled squad - but we have been working hard on the fitness and shape of the side in training so hopefully we can start to make that work show with some positive results.

One man in particular who is responsible for this seasons success for our opponnents today is manager Lee Wilson. He has done an excellent job of putting together a side of the right blend of ability, resilience and experience that now makes Shepshed realistic playoff / promotion candidates.

When Lee took over last season results didnt happen for him straight away but it was evident that with his single minded approach a reversal in fortunes was just around the corner - especially when he had the chance to put together his own team. I have been very impressed with Lee and have a lot of respect for what he is doing at Shepshed and although there is the obvious local "rivalry" between our two clubs; I would also like to think that there is also a mutual healthy respect between us too.

One person from Shepshed I have always had a lot of time for is secretary Dave Wheatley. I first came across Dave several years ago when we were both managing our clubs respective Reserve sides and I have loved the bloke ever since.

Dave is an absolute gentleman and would do absolutely anything to help anyone out in any circumstance and he is a very well respected figure throughout the non-league game. He was one of the first people on the phone to offer his support back in late October when news broke of our problems and the fact we were removing our playing budget for the rest of the season and that phone call alone speaks volumes for the man. I'm sure Shepshed are fully aware just what a gem they have at their club in Dave Wheatley.

These note were written before our trip to the Dovecote for the Boxing Day encounter so obviously I can't comment on that match. However, regardless of that, we are hoping for a positive result today here at the Moat ground in front of our own supporters in a game worthy of its New Years Day billing.

All the best to everyone for 2009 and enjoy the game today.

Gary
